Daniel Teklehaymanot stormed home in another spectacular display in the Individual time trial (ITT) that wowed the Asmara crowd......
Daniel was the undisputed first with two south Africans taking the 2nd & 3rd place podium and Algeria fourth( probably the famous Azzedin Lagab or Nabil) and Freqalsi finished 5th in this fiercely contested Individual time trial.
But Daniel proved beyond any doubt that he is in a league of his own when he began a minute behind the south african in the two lap of 18km totalling 36km..... Yet Danny caught him up and yet finished 26 seconds ahead despite the south african starting a minute ahead of Daniel Teklehaimanot. This boy is out of this world. The two south Africans, who finished way behind our Danny-boy in tnumping minute and 26 seconds, race professionally for teqms in Europe.
Two out of two so far for Eritrea. One more to go on Sunday in the final climax of the road race where Natnael, Jani Tewolde and co are expected to excel......
See you sunday......
What is even more satisfying, today, is seeing the Moroccons finishing 3rd way out of the reach of Eritrea with South African team finishing 2nd. Eritrea never forgets how, earlier this year, the Morocco cycling federation played a dirty trick on Eritrea when they concocted to deny Eritrea from participating in the Casablanca tour. Knowing that the point-leading in Africa was to get an automatic qualification place for the 2012 London Olympics, the Moroccon calculated that it could have a chance of grabbing those places if it races with itself by unfairly denying Eritrea thw right for the fixture in the race that took place in Casablanca, Morocco. Eritrea felt so unfairly treated and made a complaint to the UCI but Morocco managed to get away with it. When Haddas Eritrea pressed the UCI chief on this issue, he admitted that Eritrea is unfairly treated but he, suprisingly, added "that wasn't against the law." To our amazement, the UCI chief suggested that Eritrea does the same to Morocco if it wishes so, denying it from participating in the 7th African Championship. However two wrongs don't make one right
Our correspondent just told us on the phone that our boys have stormed home in the team time trial (TTT) just a few minutes ago. Jani Tewolde, Freqalsi, Yonathan, Daniel & Natnael were involved and they stormed home with South Africa trailing by a whooping 1min and 25 seconds( yes! you heard me! 1:25) it is also known that the some of the South African team members race for teams in Europe.
In second place followed by the whinging Moroccons in third place. It was a comprehensive thumping with Eritrea demonstrating its cycling prowess once again as it did last year in the 6th African Championship in Rwanda where it swept the board flying home with unprecedented 8 medals and winning in all categories.
The cycling crazy Asmara crowd are going absolutely wild singing "wesede ere beal sire" right at this moment.....
Hasn't sunk in here yet either & Will fill you up on more soon....
