FC Adulis and its Friends Donated £2500 to Eritrean U-20 Football Team

FC Adulis Eritreans in LondonAdulis FC is a football club established in UK in 1992 under a former name FC South London Eritreans until adopting its current name in 1995. What made FC Adulis unique is that it was and is a team composed of players coming from diverse background (i.e. ethnic, language, etc). FC Adulis has always been a true reflection of Eritrea’s rich diversity. Playing football as a team made it quite natural to infuse into the players and its supporters alike, that unique Eritrean culture of mutual respect & tolerance, thereby helping the team members continuously learning from one another, adding more strength and sustenance to the team. United in its diversity, FC Adulis not only played exhilarating football on the pitch but also played a leading role in the defence of our country, promoting our community and encouraging youngsters (both in Diaspora and back home)

In March 1999, FC Adulis had successfully organised an event under the theme, Hibri-Ayne’na’ translated as colour of our eyes and raised about £15,000 to support our brothers and sisters in the EDF (Eritrean Defence Forces) defending Eritrea from the marauding weyane’s invasion.

The naming of the theme was a direct response to the illegal actions of the minority regime in Ethiopia that is led by Genocidal Dictator Meles Zenawi. In July 1998, at the height of the Eritrea Ethiopia border conflict ordered the massive and inhumane deportations of over 80,000 Eritreans and Ethiopians of Eritrean origin from Ethiopia, by saying:

“…The Ethiopian government has the unrestricted right to expel any foreigner from the country for any reason whatsoever. Any foreigner, whether Eritrean, Japanese, etc., lives in Ethiopia because of the goodwill of the government. If the Ethiopian government says ´Go, because we don’t like the color of your eyes,’ they have to leave…”

The 80,000 deportees were forced to cross through mine-infested borders, abandoning their hard earned life time savings and assets behind because Meles Zenawi did not like the “color of their eyes”. It was a clear violation of international law, but his handlers looked the other way and some even justified his actions and made excuses for him.

Later that year, after the veteran(Yekealo) goalkeeper, Fiqre had moved to USA, the young(warsai) Moges Zerai left for Eritrea to enlist with our EDF to defend the nation. Though FC Adulis was suddenly left without a goalkeeper, that wasn’t the least of the team’s concern as its main focus, first and foremost, was the wellbeing of Eritrea. A couple of years later, FC Adulis had also organised Eritrean community in London for a successful fund-raising barbecue weekend in Cockfosters, North London, and donated all the proceedings to Eritrean Relief Association (ERA).

In 2005, FC Adulis travelled across the channel to France to play there for the 14th Anniversary of Eritrean Independence just before the team travelled that summer to Eritrea. FC Adulis bought footballs from Eritrea and donated it along with football kits to the U-14s and training bibs to the EDF. On the 14th August, that summer, FC Adulis played a friendly match against the EDF in Dekemhare. The score line is immaterial but for the record, EDF beat a depleted FC Adulis 5-0 that day. Apart from the match result, it was a good experience apart from the match result, however FC Adulis promised to come back with a full squad for a return match. The previous year, FC Adulis had a successful fund-raising event in collaboration with Abraham Afeworki (RIP) and his band to organise and represent a London-wide Eritrean team in the annual ESFNA (Eritrean Sport Federation in North America). FC Adulis will continue striving to initiate a similar Euro-wide and even world-wide Annual Eritrean championship.

And now, 18 years after the club was established, FC Adulis wants to show its appreciation to the Government of Eritrea and NasAir for playing a vital role in funding and organising a very successful CECAFA U-20 tournament in Asmara, under the theme of ‘Friendship and Development Cup.’ FC Adulis understands that promoting, funding & organising sports activities should not be shouldered by only the GoE & a few individuals but the wider public should also play active role in it. The GoE has already got its hands full and stretched to the limit on other equally important and challenging priorities of our time, building and providing basic infrastructure and services across the nation such as, clean water, sanitation, schools, heath-care facilities, electricity, sports facilities and etc....

The footballing competency exhibited by our U-20 football team just a couple of week ago was scintillating, to say the least and FC Adulis and its Associates are so proud of them. Last Saturday the 4th of September 2010, using the opportunity of the 49th Anniversary of the launching of the struggle for Eritrean Independence, FC Adulis showed its appreciation by donating £2500 towards a further development of the U-20 and sport in our country in general (please refer at the end of this document for the list of individuals who made their kind contribution). Goitom Seyoum, a veteran Adulis centre back, handed the donation to H.E. Ambassador Tesfamichael Gerahtu, himself a former professional footballer in his youth before joining the liberation struggle in the 70's.

H.E. Ambassador Tesfamicael Gerahtu

During the handover, Goitom expressed how the Eritrean Diaspora community were captivated as if 'Eritrea was playing in the World Cup' and ambassador Wedi-Gerahtu further emphasised that it was the 'initiative that FC Adulis took that should be commended more than the money contribution.'

This contribution is preliminary and believed to encourage Eritreans around the world to continue donating in kind or/and money as individuals or in groups. The aim is to reach a million pound/dollar mark in contribution in order to open a sports academy where talents are nurtured and produced for a sustainable sport development in Eritrea.

Dawit Ghebru, Sport organizer in UKFollowing the remarks made by Goitom and Ambassador Wedi-Gerahtu, Dawit Ghebru of the Eritrean Sport organiser in UK pointed out that such positive momentum need to be used to 'further and better organize in Sport and bring Eritreans in UK together.'

Moreover, it’s now official that the CECAFA official had already asked Eritrea to host the CECAFA Girls Football tournament next year (2011), following successfully hosting the CECAFA U-20. Eritreans around the world need to rise up to the challenge to mobilise and organise to fund raise and support our girls back home for a successful tournament. The resilience of our National Girls team was demonstrated in 2007 when our Girls Team came back from 2-0 down to beat Morocco’s Girls team 3-2. So, all our efforts should focus on our Girls’ team back home.

It’s also remembered that Eritrean U-11 and 14-year olds had an impressive competition in Norway this summer where, amongst 160 participants, both age groups reached the semi-final. This group of talents can be the future champions that we all should nurture and invest in. There are also more good Eritrean footballers in Europe and should be encouraged to link up with the setup back home.

The support by FC Adulis and its Associates is not limited to football only, but also in other sports like athletics and cycling and Triathlon, in which athletes compete in a combined cycling, running and swimming, one after the other. Imagine if Zeresenay was as good in swimming, he would have dominated the world Triathlon as he was a pro-cyclist in his early days before switching to track. Eritrea has the potential and should become the pioneer representing Africa in the world triathlon.

Victorious Daniel crossing the line This week alone, Eritrean athletes have accomplished extraordinary results in the world stages. For instance, Eritrean cyclist Daniel Teklehaimanot, who participated in Tour de l’Avenir race in France, accomplished a historic victory standing 3rd in the first two stages of a 144 km-long three stage mountain race. Eritrea has helped put Africa in the world map for the first time in the continent’s cycling history, even though Eritrea is the last in Africa to gain its independence through the sacrifice of its children, defeating Africa’s largest army which was supported in shift by the former world bullies, US & USSR.

Daniel on the podium Daniel is dubbed in the European media as “the hope of black Africa.” Eritrea is clearly leading the charge to the bright future for the so called ‘Dark Continent’. It’s also remembered that Eritrean cycling team has always dominated and is second to none in African cycling championship. Eritrea’s cycling history stretched back more than half a century and has one of the most enthusiastic fans in world of cycling. A couple of years ago, Eritrean cyclist participating in the African championship in Tanzania were in the league of their own. Six of our cyclists swept the board when all of them held the top six positions leaving their competitors trailing behind in the distance. Thanks to the well organised team setups and league competitions in Eritrea including world class multi-staged ‘Tour of Eritrea’ championship, Eritrean cycling is on the right track.

Samson leading the charge in the senior Men RaceLast weekend, on a rather different track, more victories were scoop when Eritrean athletes swept the board in the 26th World Mountain Running Championships (WMRC) held in Kamnik, Slovenia. In the senior men’s championship, five of our heroic boys finishing in the top 10 including gold medallist Samson Gashazghi crowned World Mountain race Champion, followed closely by his compatriot and silver medallist, Teklay Weldemariam in second place. The pre-race favourite and 2009 world champion, Geoffrey Kusuro of Uganda, was powerfully flung out of his crown to finish only 3rd and distant 29 seconds behind the 2nd placed Teklay Weldemariam. But the dethroned Ugandan athlete, Kusuro, had managed to spoil a historic Eritrean 1-2-3 on the podium by clinging on a 3rd place only by the skin of his teeth finishing only by a narrow three seconds ahead of the up and coming Eritrean athlete, Petro Shaku in fourth place.

It was a remarkable victory and a marvellous weekend for Eritrean athletics with Abraham Habtom and Haben Mohammed finishing 6th and 9th, respectively, to help Eritrea win yet another Gold medal in the team title, followed by USA and Italy in 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. Even the European senior champion, Ahmet Arslan of Turkey couldn’t keep up with our boys finishing only 7th. The most exiting of all the victories of the weekend that grabbed the headline of the western media was (Warsai) Yossief Andemichael who won the Junior 8.5km tough mountain course finishing a far-flung 210 seconds faster than the 2nd placed Ridvan Bozkurt of Turkey. This youngster can be a potential Olympic gold medallist.

Just as the EPLF (Shaebia) dominated the Nakfa mountains ranges during the struggle for independence, our athletes are dominating the mountains of the world in the sports arena as did Daniel in the mountain cycling race in France and Samson, Yosief and co in the World Mountain Race Championship in Slovenia. It’s also remembered that Zeresenay Tadesse, who won the first Olympic medal for Eritrea in Athens Olympic in 2004, is a world record holder for half Marathon and cross country race. It seems like Zeresenay who brought forth more enthusiasm in sports has inspired even many more athletes to follow in his footsteps to emulate his success on the track.

Samson, Teklay & Geoffrey in the podium

With the active participation of Eritreans world wide, the future is bright and sky is the limit. FC-Adulis urges Eritreans at home and in Diaspora to keep supporting Eritrean sports in words as well as in deeds.
