Meles Zenawi and the New Republic of Tigray

Amanuel Biedemariam

On a recent interview with ESAT, former US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Herman Cohen made some startling revelations regarding matters that influenced the history of the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia. While I am not a fan of the Ambassador and cognizant of the negative roles he played on the region over the decades, it was shocking to witness the candid responses to the barrage of questions hurled at him by a brilliant ESAT interviewer AbebeGellaw. This raises some questions. Why now, how does it factor into the political calculations of Meles, and ultimately what does it mean to Ethiopia?

China, Oil and Ethnic Cleansing in Horn of Africa

Chinese oil workers once again seem to be at the center of a nasty counterinsurgency in the Horn of Africa, in the Ogaden, located in south east Ethiopia.

The Ogaden is home to what is reported to be major deposits of gas and oil, though as in South Sudan, just how much is actually there is still just guess work.

Tigray the Looming Genocide

Amanuel Biedemariam

On a recent interview with ESAT, the Founder and President of Genocide Watch, Dr. Gregory Stanton stressed that Ethiopia is high on the list of countries of Genocide Watch. The reasons Dr. Stanton outlined are alarming; however true, yet, an opportunity for Ethiopians and other peace loving people in the world to try to stop it from taking place. This is not the first time Dr. Stanton raised alarm publicly. However, this time, Dr. Stanton detailed the reasons why; as well as how and, what could trigger genocide in Ethiopia and specifically Tigray.

Meles Zenawi – The Approved Subcontractor of War in Africa

As disclosed by the USAID website, US bilateral aid to Ethiopia is the highest in Africa. From 2008 to 2011, Ethiopia received over 969, 916, 533 and 583 million dollars respectively.

Additionally, Ethiopia also receives a substantial amount of humanitarian and developmental aid from the UK. According to the Department for International Development’s (DFID) website, in 2009/2010 financial year, the regime in Ethiopia received a total of £214.3 million in bilateral aid from the UK alone.

UN: Children at Ethiopia Camp Dying at 'Alarming' Rate

Source: VOA

The U.N. refugee agency says children at an Ethiopian camp for Somali refugees are dying at an "alarming" rate.

The agency reports that an average of 10 children under the age of five are dying each day at the Kobe refugee camp in eastern Ethiopia. It says malnutrition is the major cause of death but that a suspected measles outbreak is compounding the problems.
