The Construction Of The Eritrean Railroad
By: Rezene Russom
The need for the construction of the rail-road in Eritrea emanates from the Italian expansionist policy in East Africa. Once the Italians realized that the Eritrean occupation was assured, they developed an insatiable desire to make Eritrea as Italian overseas province.
No doubt, one can understand why the Italians were very eager to rule over Eritrea for a long period of time and in fact to make it one of its overseas provinces. The Eritrean landscape has also similarity with Italy in terms of mountainous terrain where the sky is always blue and the heat and the fresh air give a peculiar tang to the atmosphere. Also Eritrea must have been a pleasant back-water in the days before Mussolini decided to create the Second Roman Empire in this part of Africa. It was because of these that the Italians began to heavily invest in Eritrea to build modern infrastructure such as roads, airports, ports, and cable transportation system and railway line.
