The 21 year old made history today at the UCI world championships held at Flanders Belgium. Biniam left many of the cycling powerhouses behind coming up against a well-financed and trained teams.
The U23 World championship took part with 54 countries, 174 athletes, 160km of a technical & undulating race course from Antwerp to Leuven in the end producing the first African to win a Silver medal.
Eritrea earned its rightful place to field 5 athletes thanks to its amazing world’s U23 nations ranking. As top ranked in the world, only Netherland, Germany, Norway, Italy, France, Belgium and Colombia managed to field 6 athletes each. As Eritrea is one of the only top ranked country from Africa, Asia & Latin America (except Colombia) and most Europe, it has managed to earn equal places in the world championship with those of Great Britain, US, Russia and Slovakia, who has won the last 2 Tour de France.
With a race course of a slight summit finish of 5% gradient that suits our spring sensation Biniam Ghirmay, Eritrea made great use of the opportunity securing a Silver a medal.
Congratulations to all Eritreans!
The official twitter account couldn’t hold back their admiration and capability of the super sprinter Biniam Ghirmay captioning his photo as “Just the start” recognising he’s full of potential.
Eritrean fans across social media platforms expressed their joy with great jubilation. Fans on the ground also made it back to the hotel where the Eritrean team is staying for a classic celebration Eritrean style “Wesede Eri Beal Seere”
