One thing that distinguishes human beings from the rest of the animal kingdom is their ability to exert efforts in changing and modifying the nature-bestowed resources in accordance of their own needs and wants. Human beings are not limited to feed from the natural resources of the earth; they combine their efforts, knowledge and wisdom as to change and modify the natural resources to their benefits. Thus, we are distinctive from other kinds of species as such we are able to lead a civilized life comparing with other animals.

20 Years On: Commendable Efforts To Ensure Food Security

Subsistence agriculture shapes Eritrea’s economy and employs about 80 percent of its population. Statistics indicate that 2.1 millions of hectares of land, which is 17% of the total area of the country, is arable. Out of which 26% depend from rainfall and 11% cultivated through irrigation. The remaining land is either used for pastoralist or is a dry land mainly covered with sand.

The agro-ecological zones of the country are categorized as the highland area, the Eastern plains and western plains. These three zones have different climatic conditions and as a result are suitable for growing variety of crops, vegetables and fruits congruent to their climatic conditions.

Many Eritreans, perhaps, are reminded of the horrific health situation of the country’s colonial past. Coupled with the acute sufferings of war and drought, the people of Eritrea underwent the worst health situation in the World. Most of us, for sure, remember young Eritrean brothers and sisters suffering from tuberculosis, malaria, measles, polio and other infectious diseases which are said to have resulted from low standard of nutrition, sanitation, water supply, and housing.
