Eritrean News

May 5, 2010 by Salina Solomon Following the publishing of “Effective twittering for Positive Eritrea – The Eri-tweet Manual”it is now fair to say that all the positive news about Eritrea are making their ways in to the pages of twitter. This is all thanks to the participation of all resilient Eritreans that support the positive social media campaign for Eritrea. Well done to everyone that joined twitter, and made our presence felt throughout!

In this effort we should be able to do more on twitter as well as other platforms, having said that the focus of this article is about digg.com, which is one of the most important families of social media. One of the major trends that social media has brought about is constant change, these changes take place in different forms which range from the ways we communicate, ways we do business, to the ways we consume information.

Most analysts suggest that we no longer have to go to look or search for news, as it finds us; this is now a reality. How many of us login on to facebook to network with friends and see news articles shared by friends? Even more we see others debating on that news piece, which ultimately means the more debate that one news piece gets, the more it attracts our attraction. This is mostly due to the fact that we want to know what all the fuss is all about, and see the different angles or points that people are making about that news piece.

Let’s think of information or news as a commodity that we buy. As consumers of different types of commodities we tend to see if we can get opinions or read reviews of these commodities before buying them. This is because we have trust on peer recommendation, and care more about the social graph.

Digg.com is designed in a way of enabling the online community become potential advisors on the information we consume. Everyone on the internet can submit different types of media (news, images, and videos). Once submitted it is visible for other web visitors in its respective category (e.g. world, politics, business, technology, etc). If the web visitors do like the submission they digg it by clicking the Digg button, and if it gets enough diggs, it gets popular. Popularity means that it will be promoted to the front page where millions of people see it (digg.com has got millions of visitors per day).

At the moment, we are doing terrible on digg just as we were on twitter about three months ago. Now we have got the knowledge about twitter we have acted upon it, today we are getting new knowledge about digg, and we need to act on it to take control. Go to digg.com and use the search term “Eritrea” on the search box, and ask yourself; is that what I want to see? Or is that what I want others to see about my beloved country?  By the way you can also bury a story on digg, only letting you know!

Joining digg is not hard, all you need is an email address, and choosing a username, if you have a facebook account you can click on the button “Connect with Facebook” only choose a username, and you are good to go. It is as simple as that, join digg.com now, and start digging all the positive media about Eritrea.

Let’s start with the positive news which is already on digg, the article about Sites Tourists Enjoy at Ease in Eritrea or Why You Must Visit Asmara?

Imagine this news piece appearing in the front page of digg, well it is easily possible, but it is up to you to make it happen! A lot of people who are concerned about places, travel, and tourism could come across these beautifully written articles that can trigger an action for them to visit Eritrea, which could have a very positive prospect.

All the positive news about Eritrea is being suffocated by main stream media, and the most effective use of social media will give us control. As long as we work hard at this, we will be able to get the attention which we deserve the most by getting the news out to the masses.

Always remember that it is the human nature to do the things that we see other people do, which is often referred to as social proof or informational social influence. Hence we should consider digg.com as our primary weapon of influence where we create the momentum, and then it will carry on itself as the internet has got a viral effect!

To conclude I would like to say thanks for taking the time to stop by and joining the positive revolution! I hope you have also learned something new today. Have fun digging all the positive media and thoughts about Eritrea. If you would like to contribute with positive news, articles, photos, videos, and your positive thoughts please send me an email to info@eritreacompass.com and of-course your feedbacks are much appreciated.

Happy Independence Celebration Month to all Eritreans!
