The Making of a Nation - SAWA Melting Pot of the Eritrean Youth

For the few it is a means of smearing cheap political campaign, for the vast majority it is considered as the base foundation that hardens and shapes the youth of Eritrea.

Students from East to West, North to South of Eritrea from every tribe, and every remote village enter SAWA with great euphoria ready to be knighted as the guarantor of the future of this striving nation.

SAWA brings together the nine tribes and leave as one, one in a sense that forges the same dream, the shared stars in the sky that guides the youth of Eritrea along the path of the past generation that liberated Eritrea. SAWA more than any academic studies teaches its youth the history and values of the liberation struggle through which it enables today’s youth in taking the nation towards achieving all round freedom.

Every two years the month of July SAWA ROCKS! more than fifty thousand youths and parents from every corner of the country including those from the Diaspora come together to experience and witness the Eritrean youth festival in SAWA.

Now that the Eritrean Diaspora has safely returned back from Eritrea, EritreaCompass opens this space for a means of sharing experiences and make as much noise about SAWA and it’s gallant youth.

If you have attended the 4th Eri Youth Festival in SAWA, Please post your reflections below and make your mark all over EritreaCompass.

Arriving to the meeting point at 5:30am with heavy rain pouring down, you would expect the mood to be down and drowsy nevertheless the bus station was filled with people greeting each with warm hugs and smiles. Anyone that had any doubts of the journey ahead was erased when they meet a friend or a family member. More than a 150 buses set off one behind the other, all categorized by country of habitation. Some people slept, while others chatted away, but everyone cracked a smile of relief when the 14 hour journey came to an end.

That night everyone was greeted by a free meal, but many were too exhausted so they found a bed and went to sleep. The second day began with an early wakeup call in order to attend the opening ceremony. The ceremony consisted of a speech by President Isaias Afewerki, dramas being acted out, performances by artists such as Korchach, Helen Meles, the EriAm sisters, Winta Ephrem, Saba. There was even an all-star performance for the song Sawa specially written by Sophia Tesfamariam for the 2010 Sawa festival that inevitably became the summer anthem for 2010.

Following the opening ceremony the Expo festival was officially opened and the celebrations began. Expo was filled with restaurants, performers, and much more entertainment, there was something for everyone to enjoy young and old.

There were meetings, seminars and debates on all throughout the day about. Saturday continued on with people going to the seminars including a youth meeting hosted by President Isaias Afewerki. The President gave a speech, which was then followed by a question and answer session allowing the youth to ask President Isaias Afewerki any question they desired. Other seminars were also conducted by General Sebhat Ephrem (Ministry of Defence) Mr Semere Russom (Ministry of Education), Mrs Luul Ghebreab (President of national union of Eritrean women), Major General Teklia Habtesellasie (Commander of Eritrean Air force) including presentation papers by several scholars.

After the seminar with the president one of the youths that had travelled from Sweden explaining the experience “being in the same room as the President is probably one of the greatest moments in my life. He was very charismatic; he was dressed so casually that when he was talking there were moments when I forgot he was a President”.

The unique events of the youth festival was the panel discussions with different experts on what Eritrea is going to look like in the year 2020. What I observed in Sawa is a reflection of the whole Eritrea inside and outside, by participating in the youth festivals one can entertain the clear reflection of the leadership of Eritrea in the near future.

By Sunday morning the third official day, it seemed as if people had been there for at least a week as they were starting to getting into a routine and getting used to the way of life. There were many sporting events including netball and basketball, among other games. In the afternoon there was a graduation ceremony held for the youth in the Diasporas presented by President Isaias Afewerki.

The medal was held by yellow, green, red and blue ribbons representing the Eritrean flag. The evening ended with performances from a vast number of artists all through the night. Monday morning all the buses lined up like they were military soldiers waiting for orders.

The closing ceremony was another outstanding effort by the organisers with singers and actors taking to the stage. With an award ceremony for Sawa graduates. To conclude the eventful weekend everyone stood up with their right hand over their heart and an emotionally national anthem was sung. This was followed by people proceeding to get on their bus and the 14 hour journey began but very few were bothering by the length of the journey as many were excited to get back to tell their stories. Stories of how they met the President, all the new friends they made from different parts of Eritrea and around the world, the renewed respect they felt towards the youth in Sawa. In addition to the greater understand and knowledge they acquired through their experience and how they felt a new burst of patriotism and excitement for the Sawa festival 2012.

Everyone has a personal mission in life. My mission when I went to Sawa this year was to witness the un-missable event, and understand and gather as much information about the lives of Sawa graduates. Although at this particular time we had different missions from the graduates of Sawa, the big mission of building a great nation is a mission that all responsible Eritrean shares.

In order to accomplish my mission I had to spend time with as much graduates of Sawa and their leaders/teachers, where I learned a lot from. Graduates shared what Sawa meant to them and what their experiences were, where I took detailed notes. However the best way to share it with you is by summarising the important points of my understanding from the graduates.

At one particular time the mission of the graduates of Sawa was to achieve personal success, which they have. Now that they have graduated their mission in life is to serve their country, and along the way elevate all kinds of socio economic problems. The general belief is that only if the there is a stable nation there can be a stable and prosperous life! The youth of Eritrea understand the saying that goes “The road to success is always under construction”

Also one saying that I particularly like and is applicable to this reality in Eritrea goes as “No man is an island” when it come to nation building, there is nothing more important that being and acting as a team. Sawa today is busy creating teams (TEAM ERITREA) and directing them to their respective colleges where they eventually become team of experts – Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Marine Biologists, Geologists, Accountants, etc….. who all play a huge role in the nation building process.

The government of Eritrea understands the value of team building from the days of the revolution struggle, which complemented its weakness and enhanced its strengths. The government of Eritrea also understands that success depends upon the quality of teams, which is why Sawa produces teams in an even organised manner, that keeps the youth of Eritrea accountable as well as pushes them forward.

At Sawa everyone is trained to become a leader, some of you might not agree with me by taking the term leader in the context of knowing it all and having others do what-ever you say. However the term leadership in Sawa means the leader understands that their team has valuable insights, which is the key component to each leaders success. The youth in Sawa learn to become a leader by first learning to become a team member.

One of the ways to becoming a great leader is also learn keep accepting feedback from your team – even if it is not a feedback that you like. Hence Sawa not only teaches its youth military decipline, but also teaches them how to accept feedback. Talking about feedback reminds me of General Sebhat Ephrems interview on the occasion of 20th anniversary of Operation Fenkil he confidently says "In todays management education, reflection and feedback mechanisms have become a big science, but this was and is normal in EPLF" he made these remarks whilst describing the Nadew eze/Operation which the EPLF came out victoriously and sent the enemy off balance, despite all the victory the EPLF had to make reflections, and use feedback mechanisms!

One of the big things that I noticed and understood well in Sawa & the whole of Eritrea was communication, which is all about learning to speak the language of nation building. For most nations that we see in Africa the language of nation building is a foreign language. If one wants to build a nation, then that person should start to learn the words of nation building.

My personal favorite is Bequeathment For Full Emancipation in Tigrinya Tewfit Kessab Zeberekhe Harenet http://www.shabait.com/section-blog/40-editorial/1056-bequeathment-for-full-emancipation

I am glad that I have met up with the youth in Eritrea, and understand what the true reality is after taking in all the garbage from the western media!

Victory to the gallant youth of Eritrea now and forever!

Sawa was filled with moments that I will always cherish.
Every graduate that I spoke to inspired me. They were young but courageous, hopeful and ambitious.

The media slanders Eritrea on every aspect, and one major area is Sawa. So I thought when I got to Sawa I wouldn't be happy with what I saw. And when I got there, I wasn't happy...I was elated. The youth weren't pessimistic and down, they were stronger and wiser. They recognized the hardships but also acknowledged the things they gained- resiliance, friendships, knowledge, and more. One graduate told me that when first leaving for Sawa she was sad because she had to leave her family. And now upon her departure back home, she is sad because she is leaving her family. Strangers from thousands of miles away that have become friends. Friends, that she knows she wouldn't have met without Sawa. I feel honored that they shared their day with us...and that we were able to celebrate their accomplishment as one big family.

Since childhood my parents have been taking me to Eritrea, as a child it was all about playing with the kids around our house, but in recent years I started to grow up and when we always go to Eri I started to get some freedom to experience it all...........finally my parents had to accept that I was an adult!

My last couple of visits 2006 and 2008 were all about me and my friends nothing really mattered apart from restaurants, cafes, and party party party to having a jolly goooooooooooood time from Asmara to Massawa, and the Dahlak Islands!!

This time it was different, I have never seen in the past such a lot of people going to the youth festival in sawa. So I and my friends at first thought that there must be a good party down in sawa, and decided to join in and see what the fuss is all about plus we come to realise that the city of Asmara will be empty if everyone is going, then there will be no one to party with!

Journey to sawa was a not the best at times with all the rain...... but this had brought about much needed rain for the local inhabitants as well as for me and my friends which totally made our journey exciting and very adventurous (no need for me to get in too much detail on that...)

Got there and sawa just blew me away, I have never thought about it this way. The sight was amazing with a sea of people from everywhere; what I couldn't cope with was the amount of diverse languages from all around the world. But thinking about this now with a clear mind, it made me realise that Eritrea with all this human resource that could be nurtured could be a leader in the globalised world!

Words cannot describe the amount of emotions that I felt when I saw the immaculate organisations of that entire people when the festival kicked off at such an early time in the morning, the spectacular parade marching with a sea of Eritreas flag waving on the skies of sawa. One must be present right there to feel what I felt, and trust me even then you would still have no words to describe it. With huge astonishment you will only ask your companion did you feel that? And the answer will be, I SURE did!!!

From all the visits that I made to Eri this visit was one that I really appreciated much and took a lot from, the seminars were a breath of fresh air. I used to be very naive about a lot of things concerning my country in the past, and my trip to sawa has made me think twice to get more involved with my country. I have got a lot of ideas which I will put into practice before the next youth festival, and the appropriate people have also given me all the necessary guidance.

Last but not least I loved all the exhibitions, the display of art and music, and most of all Eri-artista
