Martyrs Day Commemoration 2011 in London UKStill, the spirit of our fallen heroes, the Eritrean Martyr's who gave their lives to realize the Eritrean dream as well as defend it, lives on.

Monday June 20, Eritreans in the United Kingdom flocked to Hyde Park in central London to commemorate those who fell to bring about the independence of Eritrea. Over 2,000 people from all walks of life attended the ceremony. Throughout the history of Eritrea, the sacrifice that many of our brothers and sisters paid in the defence of Eritrea has become the most cherished feature of Eritreans' identity.

The chairman of ECCC,  Mr. Muluberhan Berhe, delivered a speech to remind the crowd of the precious gift our martyr's imparted to all Eritreans. He stated that it was their selfless sacrifice which gave us independent Eritrea and Twenty years on, thanks to them, we are still enjoying the freedom that they brought about; as we gather to remember them, we do so in gratitude.

In the speech, Eritrea Ambassador to UK & Ireland, H.E. Tesfamicael Gerhatu affirmed that our martyrs did not die only to restore and defend Eritrean sovereignty but to also secure peace and justice to all Eritreans. In the light of that, all Eritreans need to realize that it is the duty of each one of us to respect  and help those with limited opportunity in free Eritrea.

Ambassador Tesfamicael Gerahtu, also emphasized that our martyrs legacy should weigh heavily on our conscience to provide social security to their living kin. It is therefore of paramount importance that we employ our resources to ensure the development and prosperity of Eritrea and gain lasting peace and security in our country. For it is only then that the well being of all Eritreans can be guaranteed.

Halfway through the ceremony, candles were lit in the name of our fallen heroes. Our symbolic tree, covered with colourful candles, invoked a moving sight as our gratitude to our martyrs will live on forever. Before the conclusion of the ceremony, some attendees narrated touching poems which summed up the feeling and mood of this sacred day. In the end, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of our dearly beloved fallen heroes. The ceremony was typified by success in every respect.
