Constructive engagement or Fixation with failed policies of the past?

Tesfay Aradom, PhD

November, 2021

The TPLF, a terrorist organization, has through its unprovoked repeated assault and diatribes by its blood thirsty leaders, clearly demonstrated to be an existential threat to the people and nation of Eritrea.  So,  the  Government  and  people  of  Eritrea  should  exercise  their right  to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity to preserve sustainable peace and stability in their country.

In 1993, a callous disregard for African lives by the US and some countries in the West  emboldened the Rwandan Interahamwe, an organization trained and indoctrinated in ethnic hatred against Tutsis and moderate Hutus, to commit genocide with impunity. As a result, 900,000 thousand Tutsis and moderate Hutus were savagely murdered. Millions became internally displaced and subjected to inhumane conditions and thousands remain traumatized due to their exposure to the 100 days carnage.

Similarly, TPLF’s persistent acts of genocide, wanton destruction, looting, expulsion and expropriation of entire communities based on national origin and commission of crimes against humanity  have been documented even by NGOs  bent on exonerating the murderous organization from its heinous crimes. Therefore, the US and Western nations should learn from their past mistakes and desist from supporting a terrorist organization that is determined to cause political disintegration and foment inter-ethnic violence in Ethiopia and wreak havoc in Eritrea. The US should not sabotage the unprecedented initiative by the Horn of Africa nations to solve their political, economic and social problems. It should celebrate their determination to promote regional and international economic and security collaboration.

Rather blaming Eritrea, historically a victim of US and Western inspired conspiracies, the international community in general and the US in particular, should appreciate and acknowledge the positive and significant role it has consistently been playing in promoting stability and peace in the region and in Ethiopia in particular. Rather than resorting to past failed policies, the US should consider a constructive engagement with the Government of Eritrea to achieve mutually beneficial economic and security objectives.

Politically motivated accusations and short sighted punitive economic decisions will only evoke acrimony, exacerbate the already dire economic and social conditions of the vulnerable communities in Ethiopia and give rise to regional political instability.
