2019 CECAFA Runner-up Eritrean national team is drawn last night in Group-B with Ethiopia and Burundi for the 2021 CECAFA challenge cup to be hosted in Bahir-Dar, Ethiopia.
Defending champion, Uganda, Tanzania are drawn in group-A (Group of death) while Kenya, who got trashed 4-1 by Eritrea in the semi-final of the last 2019 CECAFA cup, has a relatively easier draw with South Sudan & Djibouti in Group-C.
A combination of setbacks caused by the pandemic Covid-19, financial resource &/or political instability/insecurity have caused four members of the CECAFA family (Rwanda, Zanzibar, Somalia & Sudan) to withdraw their respective national teams from the 2021 CECAFA tournament.
It looks like group winners will automatically get 3 of the 4 semi-final spots while the best runner up amongst the three groups will fill in the last semi-final spot.
Group A: DRC Tanzania Uganda
Group B: Burundi Eritrea Ethiopia
Group C: Djibouti Kenya South-Sudan
